The Sr. Director of Engineering will be responsible for the constant evolution, delivery, and technical excellence of our ecommerce platform, and will be a key player in helping us craft our vision for the future.  This person should have experience building ecommerce platforms, crafting and communicating internal engineering processes, and driving team members to fulfill their potential while keeping a collaborative and service-minded direction with their teams.  A technical leader with a track record of multiple industry leading product successes, strong architectural insights, deep understanding of developer ecosystems and platforms and a champion of quality and fundamentals who operates with vision and integrity.

This role will align engineering activities with company goals and objectives, providing expert guidance and support, develop long-range strategic plans, and maintaining positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to create a culture of trust. This role will need consider the trade-offs of various technical considerations and prioritize to meet those business objectives. In this highly visible role, you will work closely with other technical functions within our greater organization as well as partner with a peer Architect, UX and Product leaders with whom to guide priorities and empower the team to deliver.

Primary Duties

  • Partner and build trusted relationships with key stakeholders, Digital Product Owners, Digital Architecture, Digital UX, Commercial Leaders, Consumer Marketing leaders, Brand Marketing leaders, IT Leaders, and Senior Leadership Team members to drive and manage the technology planning, solutioning and implementation for large, strategic, complex multi-system solutions.
  • Partner with Product Management to leverage market research, user research, data analysis, and user testing that informs product requirements to build the most intuitive, highly performant, and engaging ecommerce web experience for our customers across our multiple brands.  Provide the technical perspective as input into prioritization of backlog and roadmaps items.
  • Partner with Architecture, and IT to define a technology strategy and roadmap for large-scale digital transformation initiatives. 
  • Balancing short-term and long-term growth needs, own and drive an inclusive and diverse staffing strategy for the ecommerce engineering org. When necessary, get creative with staffing needs, including contractors, consultants, and out-sourcing vendor options.  Manage engineering financials and budget.
  • Instill a culture of ownership, learning, automation, re-use, performance, and engineering efficiency through the use of common design patterns and industry best practices.
  • Own the SDLC process by providing expertise in agile continuous delivery, dev, qa, dev ops, cloud technologies, infrastructure, monitoring, production management, culture, processes, and tools required to maintain a frictionless high-quality adaptable development environment.  Establish development standards and guidelines, as well as enforce them.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding and proficiency of new and existing technologies, stay abreast of new technology to influence our technology roadmap.
  • Partner with external vendor partners to understand and evaluate new capabilities to be leveraged to enhance the consumer experience and drive accretive ecommerce revenue growth. Own and advocate for build-vs-buy decision making.            
  • Lead by example and serve as a role model for the company by building a culture of learning, respect, transparency, and trust.  Treat security and compliance with the respect they deserve. Have a demonstrated track record of building high performing, compliant, secure applications.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding and proficiency of new and existing technologies, stay abreast of new technology to influence our technology roadmap.
  • Partner with external vendor partners to understand and evaluate new capabilities to be leveraged to enhance the consumer experience and drive accretive ecommerce revenue growth.
  • Create a team culture focused on continuous improvement. Identify gaps and opportunities to improve tools, systems and processes that drive growth, create efficiencies and deliver best-in-class customer experiences.
  • Performs duties consistent with the company’s AAP/EEO goals and policies.
  • Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • 15+ years of experience in software development working on highly scalable enterprise-class web applications preferably within ecommerce
  • 5+ years of experience working on front-end development
  • 5+ years of experience in a software architecture or technical lead role
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer science or related field.
  • Experience with design and development of complex systems; including requirements analysis, estimation, implementation and testing
  • Experience across modern front and back-end ecosystems. Salesforce experience required.
  • Experience with mobile native development a huge plus.
  • Extensive experience shipping cloud services, with technical depth to be active in decisions about the architectural investments
  • Hands-on experience with aspects of modern ecommerce technologies: search and recommendations, personalization and merchandising, buying experiences, checkout and payment options, social login and identity, up-sell / cross-sell, loyalty and referral programs
  • Significant experience building, managing, and motivating engineering organizations, ideally of 25+ people
  • Strong understanding of how to design an effective engineering organization and its workstreams
  • Understands the value of continuous deployment and long-term stability
  • Experience building teams and leveraging outside resources
  • Experience building an integrations platform/infrastructure to seamlessly integrate 3rd party applications preferred
  • Demonstrated success partnering with Product, Design, and Business leadership to build what is best for customers
  • Experience developing and deploying micro-components, microservices and in the cloud
  • Experience with micro-services, CDNs, data caches and stores
  • Mobile web and mobile app technology specific experience
  • Agile development methodology experience
  • Experience in global multi-branded B2C environments a plus.
  • Passion for technology and a high technical aptitude.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Ability to work across organizational boundaries and promote and influence direction on how to best solve business and technical problems.
