Director - Global Custom Compliance

The position is responsible for enhancing, leading, and elevating the company's Global Trade Compliance Function as a high-performing core competency and center of excellence that serves as the point of entry and central hub through which all trade compliance policies and practices are coordinated. The global compliance team is responsible for all aspects of import and export compliance programs, including liaising with government officials, vendors, service providers, and internal stakeholders for all merchandise by Wolverine Worldwide, Inc.Primary Duties
- Proactively prioritize, link, and align all trade compliance activities and program success with strategic business objectives by partnering closely with business leaders to understand the existing business structure and growth strategies.
- As a strategic advisor to the business, help the business units understand the strategic value of the compliance function and the opportunities for linking compliance initiatives and business performance.
- Remain current in rapidly evolving trade compliance regulations (such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) regulations and C-TPAT) and guide the company in navigating the increased regulation that Wolverine faces in various geographies.
- Oversee specific compliance programs, such as Duty Drawback, Duty Deduction, First Sale, FTZ EU AEO, Reconciliation programs, and the Importer Self-Assessment Program, which are audited annually to ensure the Company meets all documentary and process requirements.
- Manage all custom clearance activities in-house or through an outside broker.
- Direct an internal team and outside brokers to ensure that Wolverine's products imported globally are adequately classified in accordance with the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
- Collaborate with the General Counsel in formulating the company's response to government requests and investigations and preparing voluntary self-disclosures and other regulatory filings and inquiries.
- Conduct due diligence assessments regarding trade compliance for all mergers, acquisitions, and/or divestitures
- Develop and implement key metrics to continually measure and assess trade compliance program effectiveness across the business and to track progress and continuous improvement.
Financial/ Reporting
- In partnerships with finance and business unit leadership, plan, develop, and control the trade compliance budget while driving cost reductions through negotiations, benchmarks, and other continuous improvement efforts.
- Establish and actively monitor global trade programs and the financial impacts on Wolverine.
Technology/ Automation
- Investigate and implement new, innovative solutions utilizing technology that drive efficiency, reliability, utilization, and expense minimization.
- Support the development and implementation of specific software and applications to assist and automate processes leading to efficiencies in trade compliance.
Leadership
- Provide input into the Global Supply Chain strategy plan and cascade the execution to the team.
- Inspires global team members to learn and apply best practices; embraces and celebrates risk-taking and failure fast; champions changes and brings others along the journey
- Leverage team strengths to align work activities while driving continuous development and learning through coaching, mentoring, and feedback
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred
- 10+ years of work experience in Trade, Logistics, and Supply Chain, including expertise in managing trade/ logistics partnerships.
- Customs Broker License is highly recommended or pursuing the completion
- Strong analytic skills and the ability to break down complex business problems to find solutions.
- 5+ years or more of proven leadership experience in leading a team
- Ability to effectively manage and influence vendors and third-party providers.
- Ability to create and maintain professional relationships within all levels of the organization (peers, workgroups, customers, supervisors).
- Experience in leading cross-functional efforts within a fast-moving organization
- Effective interpersonal skills, building and managing effective teams, systems, and change implementation skills, strong verbal and written communication skills
- Process Improvement – Ability to challenge current processes and drive continuous improvement.
- Interpret Data – Ability to read, interpret, and draw accurate conclusions from technical or business material.

Working Conditions
Normal office environment. International travel is required.
